1 Samuel 17:39

Listen to this article

And Dauid girded his sword vpon his armour, and he assayed to goe, for he had not proued it: and Dauid said vnto Saul, I cannot goe with these: for I haue not proued them. And Dauid put them off him. 1 Samuel 17:39 (KJV)

The story of David and Goliath takes place during the time of the Israelite monarchy when Saul was king. The Philistines and Israelites were at war, and the giant Philistine champion, Goliath, challenged the Israelites to send out a champion to fight him.

Prior to this verse David had volunteered to face Goliath, despite being a young shepherd and not a trained warrior. King Saul offered David his armor and sword to prepare for battle. However, David, unaccustomed to wearing such equipment, realised it was not suitable for him. He chose to trust in the Lord and rely on his own skills and experience as a shepherd.

David’s rejection of Saul’s armor signifies his willingness to rely on God’s strength rather than human means. It demonstrates that he chooses to fight Goliath with the tools and abilities he already possesses. David’s trust in God and his understanding of his own limitations is a key aspect of the story.

David’s refusal of Saul’s armor teaches us that it is essential to trust in God’s provision rather than relying on external resources alone. Sometimes we may feel pressured to conform to the methods or expectations of others, but it is crucial to seek God’s guidance and use the gifts and talents He has given us. David knew himself well enough to recognise that wearing armor would hinder rather than help him, and likewise we need to be aware of our own strengths and limitations. Understanding our unique qualities equips us to make wise decisions and carry out God’s purposes for our lives. His willingness to face Goliath without traditional weapons or armor demonstrates great courage, inspiring us to trust in God’s strength, step out in faith, and confront the giants in our lives. We can find comfort knowing that when we rely on God, even seemingly insurmountable challenges can be overcome.

As believers we can draw several practical applications from this passage. We should seek God’s guidance, trust in His provision, and be authentic to ourselves. When facing challenges we can rely on our God‑given talents, be courageous, and step forward in faith, knowing that God is with us. Through David’s example we see that true victory comes from trusting in the Lord.

1 Samuel 17:39 reminds us that we are not alone in our battles. By trusting in God, knowing our strengths, and being courageous, we can face the Goliaths in our lives with confidence, knowing that victory comes through the Lord.
