1 Samuel 17:42

Listen to this article

“And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.”

Context:The context of 1 Samuel 17:42 is the battle between the Israelites and the Philistines. The Philistines had a champion warrior named Goliath, who challenged the Israelites to send out a champion to fight him in single combat. David, a young shepherd, volunteered to face Goliath.

Goliath’s disdain:In this verse, we see Goliath’s reaction when he sees David. Goliath looks at David and disdains him because David is young and appears inexperienced. Goliath, being a mighty warrior, underestimates David’s abilities based on outward appearances.

David’s youth and appearance:The verse describes David as a youth, ruddy, and of fair countenance. David was not a trained soldier like the rest of the Israelite army, but a shepherd who tended to his father’s sheep. His appearance and age added to Goliath’s scorn and assumption that David would be an easy opponent.

Lessons from the verse:

  • God uses the unlikely: The account of David and Goliath is a powerful reminder that God often chooses the weak and the seemingly insignificant to accomplish His purposes. Despite David’s young age and lack of military experience, God had anointed him to defeat Goliath and deliver the Israelites from their enemy.
  • God looks beyond appearances: Goliath’s error was judging David solely based on his physical appearance. This verse teaches us that God looks beyond outward appearances and assesses the heart and character of a person. David’s trust in God and his courage were more important than his youthful appearance.
  • Confidence in God’s calling: David’s response to Goliath’s disdain showcases his unwavering faith and confidence in God. David knew that he was called by God for this battle and that God would give him victory. As we face challenges in our own lives, we can draw inspiration from David’s trust in God’s calling and rely on Him for strength.
