1 Samuel 18:6

Posted on 26 September 2025

And it came to passe as they came when Dauid was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meete king Saul, with tabrets, with ioy, and with instruments of musicke. 1 Samuel 18:6 (KJV)

This verse occurs in the Old Testament and is part of the narrative about David’s rise to prominence in Israel. After David’s victory over the Philistine giant Goliath, his reputation and fame spread throughout the land. Saul, the king of Israel, welcomed David into his service, and this verse describes the scene when David returned from the battle.

David’s Victorious Return: 1 Samuel 18:6 marks David’s return to the city after his successful battle against Goliath. This victory was a turning point in David’s life, catapulting him into the public eye and earning him great acclaim among the people of Israel.

The Response of the Women: The women of Israel played a significant role in celebrating David’s triumph. They came out from all cities, singing, dancing, and playing musical instruments, particularly tabrets—small hand drums or tambourines to express joy and honor David for his valor.

Saul’s Encounter: The verse notes that the women came to meet King Saul as well. While Saul initially received the people’s praise as their king, the focus of the celebration shifted to the young warrior, likely intensifying Saul’s jealousy and insecurity.

Foreshadowing David’s Future: This scene foreshadows the complex relationship between David and Saul that develops in subsequent chapters. David’s rising popularity becomes a point of tension, leading to Saul’s envy and attempts to harm David, and it sets the stage for the conflict and challenges David will face.

Lessons and Applications:

God’s Anointed: David’s victory and subsequent recognition remind us that God can elevate and bless individuals according to His purpose. God had chosen David to be the future king of Israel, and this event marks the beginning of his journey toward that calling. It teaches that God’s plans may include times of victory, recognition, and honor, but also challenges and trials.

Dealing with Jealousy: Saul’s jealousy and insecurity in response to David’s success highlight the importance of addressing and overcoming jealousy in our own lives. Rather than being threatened or envious of others’ accomplishments, we should learn to celebrate their victories and support them, since jealousy can hinder relationships and lead to destructive actions.

Humility and Gratitude: Despite his newfound popularity, David remained humble and grateful, recognizing that his success ultimately came from God. As we achieve our own successes and receive recognition, it is essential to maintain a humble attitude, acknowledge God’s role in our accomplishments, and give Him thanks.

The Power of Celebration: The women’s response demonstrates the power of communal joy. In our own lives we should cultivate a spirit of celebration—not only for personal achievements but also for the victories of others. Celebrating together fosters unity, strengthens relationships, and brings glory to God.

Remember, the study of Scripture is enriched by considering the larger context and exploring related passages. Reading further in 1 Samuel provides a deeper understanding of David’s relationship with Saul and the subsequent events that shape David’s journey.
