Listen to this article

But it came to passe at the time when Merab Sauls daughter should haue beene giuen to Dauid, that shee was giuen vnto Adriel the Meholathite to wife. 1 Samuel 18:19 (KJV)

Context: The book of 1 Samuel tells the story of the establishment of the Israelite monarchy, focusing on the lives of Samuel, Saul, and David. In chapter 18 we see the growing relationship between David and Saul’s son Jonathan, as well as David’s rising popularity and success.

Merab and David: In this passage we encounter a significant event in David’s life. While Saul had promised his daughter Michal to David as a wife (1 Samuel 18:17‑19), his other daughter Merab was later given to Adriel the Meholathite (2 Samuel 21:8). This decision by Saul was a deviation from his earlier promise concerning Michal, not Merab.

Saul’s motives: Earlier in the chapter, Saul became increasingly jealous of David’s military success and popularity among the people. He saw David as a threat to his own kingship and grew suspicious of him. It is likely that Saul changed his mind about giving Michal to David as a way to distance himself from David and limit his influence.

God’s plan and timing: While Saul’s actions may have seemed unfair or disappointing to David, it is essential to remember that God’s plans and timing are not always aligned with human expectations. God had already chosen David to be the future king of Israel, and despite Saul’s attempts, David continued to serve God faithfully. This turn of events was part of God’s larger plan to shape and prepare David for his eventual role.

Lessons for us:

Trusting God’s timing – David’s experience reminds us to trust in God’s timing and not to be discouraged when things do not unfold as we expect. God’s plans for our lives may require patience and faith.

Overcoming disappointment – David could have been bitter or resentful toward Saul for breaking his promise regarding Michal, yet he remained faithful and continued to serve God. When faced with disappointment, we should respond with grace, trusting that God is working all things for our good.

God’s faithfulness – Despite Saul’s actions, God continued to be with David, guiding and protecting him throughout his journey. God’s faithfulness is not dependent on human actions or circumstances; He remains constant and true in every situation.

Application:

Seek God’s guidance – When facing challenges or unexpected turns in life, seek God’s guidance through prayer and studying His Word. He will provide wisdom and direction.

Trust in God’s plan – Even when things don’t go according to our plans, trust that God has a greater purpose and is working all things together for our good.

Respond with grace – When faced with adversity or unfulfilled promises, choose to respond with grace, forgiveness, and a heart that seeks to honor God.

Remember, as you study the Bible, it is beneficial to read the surrounding verses and chapters to gain a deeper understanding of the context and the overall message of the passage.
