Listen to this article

“And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan showed him all those things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence, as in times past.”

This verse is part of the narrative of the relationship between Jonathan, the son of King Saul, and David, who would later become the famous King David of Israel. To understand the significance of this verse, it’s helpful to provide some context.

At this point in the story, David had risen to prominence in Israel as a mighty warrior and had gained favor with the people. However, his growing popularity and success aroused jealousy and insecurity in King Saul. Saul became increasingly suspicious of David and sought to kill him out of fear that David would take his throne.

In the preceding verses, Saul made several attempts to kill David. However, Jonathan, who was a close friend of David and also Saul’s son, interceded on David’s behalf and warned him about his father’s plans. Jonathan believed in David’s innocence and had a deep bond of friendship with him.

Context:is not present here, instead we have In 1 Samuel 19:7, Jonathan takes action by calling David and showing him all the things that were happening. Jonathan wanted David to be aware of the danger he faced. Jonathan’s actions demonstrated his loyalty, love, and concern for David’s well‑being.

Furthermore, Jonathan brought David into the presence of Saul, as he had done before. This act was significant because it allowed David to regain favor with Saul temporarily. David had been a trusted servant and musician in Saul’s court before Saul’s jealousy took hold. By being in Saul’s presence, David had an opportunity to prove himself once again and perhaps alleviate Saul’s suspicions.

However, it’s important to note that despite Jonathan’s efforts, Saul’s envy and paranoia eventually drove him to pursue David relentlessly, making David’s life difficult and dangerous. Jonathan’s support and friendship were crucial during this time, as they provided encouragement and assistance to David.

From a broader perspective, this verse speaks to the power of genuine friendship, loyalty, and intercession. Jonathan’s actions reflect his selflessness and willingness to protect and help his friend. In the biblical narrative, Jonathan’s friendship with David is often seen as an example of true and steadfast friendship.

The story of Jonathan and David highlights the importance of supporting and standing up for one another in difficult times. It also serves as a reminder of the impact individuals can have when they choose to act with love and compassion, even in the face of adversity.
