1 Samuel 19:9

Listen to this article

“And the evil spirit from the Lord was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his javelin in his hand: and David played with his hand.”

In this verse, we find Saul, the first king of Israel:in a state of inner turmoil. The phrase “the evil spirit from the Lord was upon Saul” raises questions for some readers, as it seems contradictory to think that God would send an evil spirit. However, it’s important to note that in the Old Testament, God sometimes permitted or allowed certain things to happen as part of His divine plan, without directly causing them.

In this case, Saul had already demonstrated disobedience and unfaithfulness to God:As a consequence, God allowed an evil spirit to trouble Saul. This spirit likely exacerbated Saul’s existing negative emotions and fueled his jealousy towards David.

The scene unfolds as Saul is sitting in his house, holding a javelin:David, who had become a trusted warrior and a beloved figure in Israel, is summoned to play his harp. David’s music had a soothing effect on Saul in previous instances when he was troubled, and David was known for his skillful playing.

David’s presence and music were intended to bring comfort and relief to Saul:However, the presence of the evil spirit within Saul intensified his feelings of envy and fear towards David, eventually leading to dangerous and life‑threatening situations for David.

This verse highlights the contrasting experiences of Saul and David:While Saul is tormented by jealousy and an evil spirit, David faithfully serves Saul, offering his musical talent to alleviate Saul’s distress.

As we continue to read the following verses in 1 Samuel, we see that Saul’s jealousy escalates:and he tries to kill David on multiple occasions. David, however, remains loyal to God and shows wisdom and discretion in his interactions with Saul, avoiding direct confrontation and seeking refuge when necessary.

This passage serves as a reminder of the dangers of envy:and the importance of remaining faithful and obedient to God, even in the face of adversity. David’s response to Saul’s animosity sets an example for us to rely on God, trust in His timing, and show respect for those in authority.
