1 Samuel 19:9
And the euill spirit from the Lord was vpon Saul, as he sate in his house with his iauelin in his hand: and Dauid played with his hand. 1 Samuel 19:9 (KJV)
In 1 Samuel 16:14, the Scripture states: “But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.” This passage describes Saul, the first king of Israel, experiencing inner turmoil. The phrase “an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him” may raise questions for some readers, as it appears contradictory that God would permit an evil spirit. However, in the Old Testament, God sometimes allows certain circumstances to occur within His divine plan without directly causing them. Saul had demonstrated disobedience and unfaithfulness to God, and as a consequence, God permitted this troubling spirit. The spirit intensified Saul’s existing negative emotions and fueled his jealousy toward David.
Later, in 1 Samuel 18:10, when the evil spirit came upon Saul again, he prophesied in his house while David played the harp as usual, and a javelin was in Saul’s hand. The scene unfolds as Saul is sitting in his house, holding a javelin, and David, who had become a trusted warrior and a beloved figure in Israel, is summoned to play his harp. David’s music had a soothing effect on Saul in previous instances when he was troubled, and David was known for his skillful playing. David’s presence and music were intended to bring comfort and relief to Saul.
David’s music had previously brought comfort to Saul during times of distress, but the presence of the evil spirit heightened Saul’s envy and fear of David, eventually leading to dangerous and life‑threatening situations for David. This sequence illustrates the contrast between Saul’s torment and David’s faithful service. While Saul is tormented by jealousy and an evil spirit, David faithfully serves Saul, offering his musical talent to alleviate Saul’s distress.
Despite Saul’s growing hostility, David remained loyal to God, demonstrating wisdom and discretion by avoiding direct confrontation and seeking refuge when necessary. As we continue to read the following verses in 1 Samuel, we see that Saul’s jealousy escalates and he tries to kill David on multiple occasions. David, however, remains loyal to God and shows wisdom and discretion in his interactions with Saul, avoiding direct confrontation and seeking refuge when necessary.
This passage serves as a reminder of the dangers of envy and the importance of faithfulness and obedience to God, even amid adversity. David’s response to Saul’s animosity exemplifies reliance on God, trust in His timing, and respect for authority.
