1 Samuel 19:20

And Saul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.

1 Samuel 19:20 (KJV)

This verse sits within the larger account of King Saul’s jealous pursuit of David. Saul, once favoured by God, became envious of David’s success and popularity, and he repeatedly tried to kill him. David was forced to flee, yet Saul remained determined to capture him.

Saul sent messengers to seize David. When they arrived, they saw a company of prophets prophesying, with Samuel standing as their appointed leader. The Spirit of God then came upon Saul’s messengers, and they also prophesied. This was not a human response but a divine interruption. The men who came to arrest David were instead overcome by God’s Spirit and joined in prophetic praise.

Samuel’s presence as the appointed leader over the prophets shows his ongoing prophetic authority. The scene also reveals that the Spirit of God is not subject to human commands or military orders. Saul’s plan was halted by a power greater than any king.

This event echoes the pattern seen elsewhere in Scripture where God’s Spirit overcomes human intentions. In 1 Samuel 10:10, Saul himself had prophesied when the Spirit came upon him, showing that God can use even unwilling people for His purposes. Here, the same Spirit redirects Saul’s messengers, turning would-be captors into worshippers.

God’s sovereignty is not limited by human plans. He can interrupt any situation, even one ordered by a king, to protect His chosen servant. For believers, this is a call to trust that God is able to frustrate the schemes of those who oppose His will. It also encourages us to remain faithful, knowing that God watches over His own.

The messengers came to take David, but they left prophesying. This dramatic reversal reminds us that God’s purposes cannot be thwarted. When we face opposition, we can rest in the assurance that the same Spirit who turned Saul’s agents into instruments of praise is at work today, guarding and guiding those who belong to Him.
