1 Samuel 19:21

Listen to this article

“And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also.”

This verse is part of the narrative in the Old Testament, specifically within the story of Saul’s jealousy and pursuit of David, who had been anointed by God as the future king of Israel. To understand the context of this verse, it’s helpful to look at the preceding verses.

In 1 Samuel 19, Saul, the current king of Israel, became increasingly envious of David due to the people’s admiration for David’s military successes and the favour that God had bestowed upon him. Saul had attempted to kill David multiple times, but each time, David was spared by God’s intervention.

In verse 21, we find that Saul, upon learning that David was with the prophets in Naioth, sent messengers to apprehend him. However, when these messengers arrived in the presence of the prophets, something unexpected happened: they were overcome by the Spirit of God and began prophesying. This happened not only once but three times.

The significance of this event lies in the fact that Saul’s efforts to capture David were thwarted by God’s intervention. Instead of carrying out Saul’s orders, the messengers were influenced by the Spirit of God and prophesied. This can be seen as a divine act of protection for David.

The repeated occurrence of Saul sending messengers who ended up prophesying serves as a clear demonstration of God’s sovereignty and power over the situation. Despite Saul’s persistent attempts to harm David, God’s divine intervention ensured that David remained safe.

This passage also emphasizes the contrast between Saul, who was growing increasingly disobedient to God, and David, who was known for his faithfulness and reliance on God. David consistently sought God’s guidance and trusted in His deliverance, while Saul allowed jealousy and fear to consume him.

From a broader perspective, this passage reminds us of God’s ability to protect and preserve His chosen ones, even in the face of great adversity. It also underscores the importance of remaining faithful to God, even when faced with challenges and opposition.

In summary:1 Samuel 19:21 portrays Saul’s failed attempts to capture David, as God intervened and caused the messengers to prophesy instead. This passage highlights God’s sovereignty, protection, and the stark contrast between Saul’s disobedience and David’s faithfulness.
