Listen to this article

“And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul.”

Context:The book of 1 Samuel provides an account of the transition of leadership from the judges to the establishment of the monarchy in Israel. In this particular verse, we find Jonathan, the son of King Saul, forming a deep friendship with David, who would later become the renowned King David.

Jonathan’s Love for David:Jonathan and David’s friendship is one of the most beautiful examples of loyalty and genuine love in the Bible. Their bond was formed during a time when David was serving in Saul’s court, and Jonathan recognised David’s courage and faith in God. Jonathan’s love for David was so strong that it surpassed even the love he had for himself. This verse highlights Jonathan’s desire for David’s safety and well‑being.

Covenant of Friendship:In this verse, Jonathan asks David to make a renewed oath of loyalty. This indicates the seriousness and depth of their friendship. It also reflects Jonathan’s concern for David’s life, as he foresaw the growing tension between David and Saul. By asking David to swear again, Jonathan wanted to ensure that David would be committed to their covenant of friendship, even in the face of danger.

Lessons on Friendship and Love:The friendship between Jonathan and David teaches us valuable lessons about true friendship and love. It demonstrates selflessness, loyalty, and sacrificial care for one another. Jonathan’s love for David goes beyond superficial affections and is characterised by deep emotional connection and support. Their friendship stands as a model for how we can love and support others in our lives, even in challenging circumstances.

Application:

  • True friendship:We should strive to cultivate genuine and loyal friendships, valuing the well‑being of our friends as much as our own.
  • Selfless love:Jonathan’s love for David exemplifies selflessness. As Christians, we are called to love others sacrificially, putting their needs above our own.
  • Covenant commitment:Just as Jonathan asked David to renew their covenant, we should remain committed to our friendships and relationships, especially during difficult times.
  • Support and encouragement:Jonathan was a source of support and encouragement for David. We should seek to uplift and support our friends, helping them navigate challenges and grow in their faith.

In summary, 1 Samuel 20:17 highlights the deep and selfless friendship between Jonathan and David. Their bond serves as an example for us to cultivate genuine friendships and demonstrate selfless love in our relationships with others.
