Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb.

Context

This verse introduces two key people in the story of David’s time in the wilderness. Nabal is a wealthy but harsh man, and Abigail is his wife. The description of their character prepares the reader for the conflict that follows when David asks Nabal for help.

Meaning

The name “Nabal” means “fool” or “senseless” in Hebrew. The verse calls him “churlish and evil in his doings,” meaning he was rough, rude, and morally wrong in his actions. In contrast, Abigail is “a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance.” She had both wisdom and beauty. The phrase “of the house of Caleb” shows that Nabal belonged to the family of Caleb, a man known for faith and courage in Israel’s history. This makes Nabal’s bad behavior even more striking, because he did not live like his ancestor.
