1 Samuel 25:15

But the men were very good unto us, and we were not hurt, neither missed we any thing, as long as we were conversant with them, when we were in the fields:

1 Samuel 25:15 (KJV)

David and his men lived in the wilderness and guarded Nabal’s shepherds and flocks. When David asked for food, Nabal refused harshly. Here, David’s messengers speak to Abigail, describing how Nabal’s servants treated them well.

The messengers say Nabal’s men were “very good unto us.” They were not hurt, and they missed nothing while in the fields. This means David’s men acted with kindness and integrity. They did not steal or harm anything belonging to Nabal. Their conduct was a safeguard, like a wall, as the servants later explain in 1 Samuel 25:16. The testimony is clear: David’s men were kind, civil, useful, and serviceable. They protected the flocks and servants, ensuring nothing was lost or taken. This good conduct stood in contrast to Nabal’s harsh refusal, showing that David’s men deserved better treatment than they received.

This testimony contrasts with Nabal’s rudeness. David’s men deserved better treatment than they received. The verse shows the value of faithful service and the expectation of reciprocal kindness. It also prepares for Abigail’s wise intervention, as she recognizes the injustice and acts to prevent bloodshed. The principle of treating others with goodness and acknowledging such goodness is central here. The passage illustrates how integrity in daily interactions can build trust and prevent conflict.

Believers should show goodness to others, even when they may not receive it in return. Our conduct can protect and bless those around us. We should also be grateful for kindness shown to us and acknowledge those who serve us well. Treating others with respect often leads to peaceful relationships. This passage calls us to reflect on the value of integrity in daily interactions and the importance of gratitude and fair treatment toward those who serve us well. When we serve faithfully, we honor God and bear witness to His character.

This verse encourages us to examine our own actions. Do we act with integrity and care, like David’s men? Do we appreciate the goodness of others? God notices faithful service and calls us to reflect His gracious character in our daily interactions.
