1 Samuel 26:2

Posted on 2 October 2025
Listen to this article

“Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.”

Context:The book of 1 Samuel primarily focuses on the transition from the period of the judges to the establishment of kingship in Israel.

In this particular chapter, we find King Saul relentlessly pursuing David. Saul’s relentless pursuit of David is driven by jealousy, fear, and a desperate desire to maintain his power and protect his position as king.

“Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph”: Saul, driven by his jealousy and paranoia, led an expedition to the wilderness of Ziph. The wilderness of Ziph was a hilly and rugged region southeast of Hebron, located in the territory of Judah. Saul was determined to find and capture David in this area.

“Having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him”: Saul took a significant number of soldiers with him—three thousand “chosen” men from Israel. These were experienced warriors who were likely skilled and equipped for battle.

“To seek David in the wilderness of Ziph”: Saul’s primary purpose in leading this expedition was to locate and apprehend David. This marked yet another attempt by Saul to eliminate the threat he perceived David to be.

Key Lessons:

Jealousy and envy can lead to destructive actions:Saul’s jealousy and fear of David’s rising prominence caused him to pursue a course of action that was not in line with God’s will. This verse serves as a reminder of the dangers of allowing jealousy and envy to consume us and steer us away from God’s plan.

God’s anointed may face opposition:David, whom God had chosen as the future king, faced immense opposition from Saul. This highlights the fact that even those anointed by God may encounter obstacles and opposition on their journey. It is essential to trust in God’s timing and faithfulness, even in the face of adversity.

God’s protection and guidance:Throughout this period of pursuit, God protected David and guided him. Despite the constant danger, David remained faithful to God and relied on His provision. This verse reminds us of God’s faithfulness in preserving and guiding His chosen ones.

Application:As we reflect on 1 Samuel 26:2, we can learn from Saul’s misguided actions and David’s unwavering trust in God. We should guard our hearts against jealousy and envy, seeking to align our desires with God’s will. Additionally, when facing opposition or adversity, we can find comfort in knowing that God is with us, providing protection and guidance along the way. Let us trust in His plan and remain faithful, seeking His wisdom in every situation.

Note:This passage underscores the consequences of envy and the importance of aligning one’s actions with God’s will. It also reminds us that true success and favour come from humility, obedience, and reliance on God’s guidance, rather than from personal ambition or jealousy.
