1 Samuel 26:7

Posted on 2 October 2025
Listen to this article

“So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear stuck in the ground at his bolster: but Abner and the people lay round about him.”

In this passage, we find David and Abishai on a mission. To better understand the significance of this verse, let’s examine the context:The book of 1 Samuel documents the transition of leadership in Israel from the time of the judges to the establishment of the monarchy under King Saul and later King David. At this point, Saul, the first king of Israel, was seeking to kill David out of jealousy and fear, perceiving him as a threat to his kingship.

David:He was chosen by God to be the future king of Israel, yet he remained loyal and obedient to Saul, even in the face of persecution. David was known for his faith, courage, and reliance on God.

Abishai:He was one of David’s trusted and mighty men, known for his bravery and loyalty to David.

Lessons from 1 Samuel 26:7:

  • Respect for Authority:Despite the animosity between David and Saul, David respected Saul’s position as king and did not take matters into his own hands. He waited for the right opportunity and relied on God’s timing to deal with Saul.
  • Integrity and Self-Control:David and Abishai found Saul asleep and vulnerable, but David demonstrated self-control by refusing to harm Saul. He recognized that it was not his place to harm the anointed king of Israel, even though Saul sought his life.
  • Trust in God’s Protection:David’s faith in God’s providence was evident in this situation. He knew that God had anointed him as the future king, and he trusted God’s plan to bring about his ascent to the throne. Therefore, he refrained from taking revenge or acting out of anger.
  • The Power of Forgiveness:David had numerous opportunities to retaliate against Saul, but he consistently chose forgiveness and mercy. This episode serves as a reminder that forgiveness is a powerful act and can break the cycle of violence and animosity.

Overall, this verse highlights David’s character and faith in God, as well as his commitment to obeying God’s commands even in difficult circumstances. It also emphasizes the importance of respecting authority, exercising self-control, and relying on God’s guidance in our own lives.

It’s important to read the surrounding verses and chapters to fully grasp the depth and richness of the narrative. I encourage you to continue exploring the book of 1 Samuel to gain a more comprehensive understanding of David’s journey and the lessons we can learn from his experiences.
