1 Samuel 26:24

Posted on 2 October 2025
Listen to this article

“And, behold, as thy life was much set by this day in mine eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the LORD, and let him deliver me out of all tribulation.”

Context: The verse comes from the story of David and Saul. In this chapter, David had the opportunity to kill Saul, who was pursuing him relentlessly. However, David spared Saul’s life twice because he respected Saul’s position as the anointed king of Israel and did not want to harm the Lord’s anointed.

Key Points: Value of Life: In this verse, David acknowledges that he highly valued Saul’s life. Despite being pursued by Saul, David recognizes that Saul’s life was precious and respected by him. This statement reveals David’s heart of humility, mercy, and reverence for God’s chosen leader. Appeal to God: David goes on to make a request of God, stating, “let my life be much set by in the eyes of the LORD.” Here, David seeks God’s favor and protection, asking to be esteemed and preserved just as he esteemed and spared Saul. David acknowledges that his own life is also in need of God’s deliverance from all tribulation. Trust in God’s Deliverance: By expressing his desire to be valued by the Lord, David shows his trust in God’s ability to protect and rescue him from all trouble. David seeks God’s intervention in his life, relying on God’s faithfulness and provision to bring him out of any tribulation he may face.

Lessons and Applications: Respect for Authority: David’s actions highlight the importance of respecting those in authority, even when they may be undeserving or hostile towards us. By sparing Saul’s life, David demonstrated reverence for the position of king and recognized that it was God’s role to remove Saul from the throne if necessary. Humility and Mercy: David’s attitude reflects humility and mercy. Rather than seeking revenge or taking matters into his own hands, David allowed God to be the judge and trusted in His timing. This teaches us the importance of responding to difficult situations with grace, humility, and a reliance on God’s justice. Trusting in God’s Protection: David’s plea to God illustrates his reliance on divine protection. Similarly, we can find encouragement in seeking God’s favor and placing our trust in His deliverance. When we face trials or challenges, we can turn to God, knowing that He is our ultimate source of strength and refuge.

In conclusion, 1 Samuel 26:24 showcases David’s respect for life, his appeal to God, and his trust in divine deliverance. This verse encourages us to respect authority, demonstrate humility and mercy, and place our trust in God’s protection and deliverance in our own lives.
