1 Samuel 26:25

Posted on 2 October 2025
Listen to this article

“Then Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David: thou shalt both do great things, and also shalt still prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.”

This verse concludes the story of an encounter between David and Saul, which takes place in the wilderness of Ziph. In this chapter, David had once again spared Saul’s life, showing him mercy and proving his loyalty despite Saul’s relentless pursuit to kill him.

Let’s examine the key themes and lessons we can derive from this verse:

Recognition of David’s Character:Despite Saul’s troubled relationship with David, he acknowledges David’s righteousness and acknowledges that David is blessed. Saul recognizes the potential within David, acknowledging that he will accomplish great things and ultimately prevail. This recognition highlights the contrast between David’s character and Saul’s own shortcomings as a leader.

God’s Hand on David’s Life:Saul’s words imply that he understands that David’s successes are not merely a result of his own abilities but that God’s hand is upon him. The victories and accomplishments that David will achieve are attributed to God’s favour and divine intervention in his life. This acknowledgment reflects the belief that God chooses and blesses individuals according to His purposes.

David’s Humility and Obedience:In response to Saul’s words, David respectfully accepts the blessing and honour bestowed upon him. He does not boast or respond with arrogance, but instead humbly goes on his way. David’s humility is seen throughout his interactions with Saul, and his consistent obedience to God’s will serves as an example to believers of the importance of maintaining a humble heart.

Saul’s Temporary Change:It is worth noting that Saul’s acknowledgment of David’s greatness and his blessings is temporary. Despite recognizing David’s worth, Saul’s jealousy and fear ultimately consume him, leading to his continued pursuit of David’s life. This highlights the consequences of envy and the destructive nature of allowing negative emotions to drive our actions.

Overall, 1 Samuel 26:25 presents us with a scene where the differences in character between David and Saul are starkly contrasted. It emphasises the importance of humility, obedience to God, and the acknowledgment of His blessings in our lives. It also serves as a reminder that temporary acknowledgments or changes of heart may not always lead to lasting transformation if we do not address the underlying issues within our hearts. As you further explore the story of David and Saul in the book of 1 Samuel, you will encounter many more lessons and insights into the nature of God’s chosen leaders and the consequences of their actions.
