1 Samuel 30:21

Posted on 7 October 2025
Listen to this article

“And David came to the two hundred men, which were so faint that they could not follow David, whom they had made also to abide at the brook Besor: and they went forth to meet David, and to meet the people that were with him: and when David came near to the people, he saluted them.”

This verse is part of a larger narrative found in 1 Samuel 30, which describes an incident in the life of David:At this point in the story, David and his men were on the run from King Saul, who sought to kill David out of jealousy. They found themselves in the land of the Philistines seeking refuge, and during their absence, the Amalekites raided their camp, burned it down, and captured their wives, children, and all their possessions.

David and his men returned to their destroyed camp to find their families missing and their belongings plundered. Distraught and filled with grief, the men were deeply exhausted and emotionally drained. However, David did not give in to despair. Instead, he encouraged himself in the Lord, sought guidance, and formulated a plan to pursue the Amalekites and recover everything they had lost.

In verse 21, we see that David came to a group of 200 men who were so exhausted that they could not continue the pursuit. These individuals had been left behind at the brook Besor because they were too weak to carry on with the rest of the group. It’s worth noting that this situation highlights the diverse composition of David’s army, consisting of both strong and weak men.

As David approached these weary men, they went out to meet him, along with the people who were still with him. This verse portrays a scene of unity and support within David’s group. Despite the setbacks they faced, the men who had the strength to continue the pursuit met the exhausted ones to encourage and show solidarity with them.

When David came near to the people, he saluted them. This act of greeting and acknowledgment by David demonstrated his care and concern for all his men. Despite the urgency of the situation, David took the time to show respect and appreciation to those who had accompanied him thus far.

This verse reminds us of the importance of compassion, encouragement, and unity in times of difficulty. David’s example teaches us to value and uplift every member of the community, regardless of their strength or weakness. Additionally, it highlights the significance of acknowledging and greeting one another, even amidst challenging circumstances. In doing so, we can foster a spirit of camaraderie and support that helps us overcome obstacles together.

Overall, 1 Samuel 30:21 serves as a reminder of the strength found in unity, compassion, and the importance of acknowledging and valuing every individual within a community.
