1 Samuel 30:23

Posted on 7 October 2025
Listen to this article

“And David said unto his men, The LORD hath delivered the army that came against us into our hand, and also the spoil of the people that went out and smote them, which we have taken for ourselves, and the cattle also.”

Context:First, let’s understand the context of this verse. In 1 Samuel 30, David and his men returned to their base in Ziklag to find that the Amalekites had raided the city, taking captive their families, including David’s wives. David and his men pursued the Amalekites, and with God’s help, they were victorious, recovering all that had been taken. Verse 23 comes at the end of this account.

Gratitude for Victory:“Then said David, Ye shall not do so, my brethren, with that which the LORD hath given us, who hath preserved us, and delivered the company that came against us into our hand” (1 Samuel 30:23, KJV). David addresses his men as brethren, emphasising their unity. He instructs them not to act selfishly and keep everything for themselves. Instead, he reminds them to be grateful for the victory they achieved and acknowledge that it was the Lord who gave them success.

Acknowledging God’s Protection:David recognises that it was the Lord who preserved and protected them during the pursuit and battle with the enemy. Despite the initial distress and loss they experienced, God enabled them to recover everything and defeat their adversaries. This verse highlights the importance of acknowledging God’s hand in our victories and recognising that any success we experience ultimately comes from Him.

Sharing the Spoils:“For who will hearken unto you in this matter? but as his part is that goeth down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they shall part alike” (1 Samuel 30:23, KJV). David emphasises fairness and unity among his men. He states that both those who actively fought in the battle and those who remained behind to guard the supplies deserve an equal share of the spoils. This principle promotes harmony and unity within the community.

Application:As we reflect on this verse, we can draw several applications for our own lives. Firstly, we should always acknowledge God’s role in our victories and successes, giving Him the credit and glory. Secondly, gratitude should fill our hearts when we experience deliverance from difficult situations. Thirdly, promoting fairness and unity within our communities is crucial, valuing and recognising the contributions of each individual. In conclusion, 1 Samuel 30:23 teaches us the importance of gratitude, acknowledging God’s protection, and promoting unity among believers. It reminds us to be grateful for the victories God grants us and to share the blessings we receive with others.
