“And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.”

Context:2 Samuel 2:1 occurs after the death of Saul, the first king of Israel. David had already been anointed as the next king by the prophet Samuel but had not yet ascended to the throne. This verse marks a significant transition in David’s life as he seeks guidance from the Lord regarding his next steps.

Seeking God’s Guidance:David’s first action after Saul’s death is to inquire of the Lord. This demonstrates David’s reliance on God’s wisdom and direction in making important decisions. Rather than relying on his own understanding or the opinions of others, David acknowledges the need to seek divine guidance. As believers, we can learn from David’s example and remember to seek God’s guidance in our own lives.

The Importance of Prayer:David enquired of the Lord through prayer, seeking God’s will for his next move. Prayer is a vital aspect of our relationship with God, allowing us to communicate with Him, share our concerns, seek guidance, and receive His answers. It shows our dependence on God and acknowledges His sovereignty over our lives. Just as David prayed before making important decisions, we should also bring our concerns and questions to God in prayer.

God’s Response:When David asked if he should go up into any of the cities of Judah, the Lord instructed him to go up. God confirmed David’s readiness to assume leadership and take action. The Lord’s response to David’s inquiry shows His approval and support for David’s reign. It’s a reminder that when we seek God’s guidance with a sincere heart, He will respond and direct our paths.

The Destination:Hebron: God further instructed David to go up to Hebron. Hebron was a city in the territory of Judah and held significance in Israel’s history. It was the place where Abraham, the father of the nation, had lived and where he was buried. Hebron was also the city where David’s reign began. The choice of Hebron as David’s destination was part of God’s plan to establish David as king and fulfill His promises.

Lessons for Us:

  • Trusting in God’s Timing:David did not rush into taking the throne but sought the Lord’s guidance. This teaches us the importance of trusting God’s timing in our lives. Sometimes, we may feel impatient for a promotion, a change, or a significant event, but seeking God’s guidance and waiting for His timing is crucial.
  • Seeking God’s Direction:David’s example encourages us to seek God’s direction in all aspects of our lives. Whether it’s making decisions about relationships, career choices, or other important matters, seeking God’s guidance ensures that we align our plans with His will.
  • Relying on God’s Wisdom:David’s inquiry of the Lord acknowledges that God’s wisdom surpasses human understanding. As believers, we can seek God’s wisdom through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking counsel from wise and godly individuals.
  • Taking Steps of Faith:After receiving God’s instruction, David took action and went to Hebron. Likewise, when we receive God’s guidance, it’s essential to step out in faith and follow His leading, trusting that He will be with us every step of the way.

In conclusion, 2 Samuel 2:1 teaches us the importance of seeking God’s guidance, relying on His wisdom, and trusting in His timing. It reminds us to seek His will through prayer and to follow His instructions with faith and obedience.
