“And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul.”

Historical Context:To understand the significance of this verse, we need to consider the historical context. At this point in the biblical narrative, David had been anointed as the future king of Israel, but Saul, the current king, still reigned. The verse tells us that there was an ongoing conflict between the supporters of Saul (the house of Saul) and those loyal to David (the house of David).

Abner’s Role: Abner was the commander of Saul’s army and a prominent figure during this time. Despite Saul’s death, Abner continued to support the house of Saul, which created tension between him and David. Abner was a powerful and influential figure who could sway the course of events in the kingdom.

Abner’s Loyalty:In this verse, we see Abner consolidating his strength and influence in support of the house of Saul. Despite David’s anointing and his recognition as the future king, Abner remained loyal to Saul’s descendants. This loyalty led to further division and conflict between David’s supporters and those who remained faithful to Saul’s house.

Implications for David’s Reign:Abner’s allegiance to the house of Saul posed a significant challenge for David. While David had the anointing and God’s favour, he still had to navigate the complex political landscape and win the support of influential figures like Abner to establish his reign. Abner’s actions in strengthening the house of Saul delayed the unification of the kingdom under David’s rule.

Lessons for Us: This verse reminds us of the complexities and challenges that can arise when God’s plan is unfolding. It teaches us that even when God has anointed us for a specific purpose or position, we may face opposition and resistance from unexpected sources. Like David, we must remain faithful, trust in God’s timing, and continue to pursue His will, even when faced with obstacles.

God’s Sovereignty: Despite the political and personal struggles David faced, ultimately, God’s plan prevailed. Abner’s actions, as well as the subsequent events, were all part of God’s sovereign plan to establish David as the king over Israel. It serves as a reminder that God works through human actions, even those that seem contrary to His immediate purposes, to accomplish His greater plan.

In conclusion, 2 Samuel 3:6 reveals that the ongoing conflict between the house of Saul and the house of David highlights the tension and rivalry that existed during this pivotal period in Israel’s history.
