2 Samuel 3:12

Listen to this article

“And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying also, Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee.”

Context:The verse you mentioned is part of the narrative in 2 Samuel that describes the political situation after the death of King Saul. Saul’s reign ended tragically, and David, the anointed king by God, had been ruling over Judah. Meanwhile, Saul’s son, Ishbosheth, had become the king over the rest of Israel. In this verse, Abner, the commander of Ishbosheth’s army, sends messengers to David with a proposal.

Abner’s Proposal:Abner reaches out to David on his own behalf and asks, “Whose is the land?” This question can be interpreted as Abner recognising David’s rightful claim to the kingship over the entire nation of Israel. Abner then suggests making a league or covenant with David, offering his support by saying, “my hand shall be with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee.”

Abner’s Motivation:Abner’s actions are significant because he was a prominent figure in Saul’s regime and had been loyal to Ishbosheth, Saul’s son. However, it appears that Abner recognised David’s anointing and his growing influence. He likely saw the benefit of aligning himself with the one whom God had chosen as king.

David’s Response:In the subsequent verses, David agrees to Abner’s proposal but makes a condition that his wife, Michal, be returned to him. This condition is significant because Michal was David’s first wife, and Saul had taken her away from him and given her to another man. By requesting Michal’s return, David is not only asserting his rights but also consolidating his claim to the throne.

God’s Sovereignty:Throughout this narrative, we can see God’s sovereignty at work. Despite the challenges and conflicts surrounding the transition of power, God’s plan to establish David as the king of Israel continued to unfold. Abner’s recognition of David’s rightful claim, as well as David’s ascent to power, were part of God’s sovereign plan.

Lessons from 2 Samuel 3:12:

  • God’s timing and plan are often beyond our understanding. Even in the midst of political upheaval, God’s purposes are accomplished.
  • God can use unexpected allies or circumstances to fulfill His will. Abner, who had previously been loyal to Saul’s house, became instrumental in David’s path to the throne.
  • It is essential to recognise and respect God’s anointing on certain individuals or situations. Abner acknowledged David’s rightful claim and sought to align himself with God’s chosen king.

Overall, this verse highlights the ongoing process of David’s rise to the throne and the role of various individuals in fulfilling God’s plan. It reminds us of the importance of recognising God’s sovereignty and aligning ourselves with His purposes.
