“And Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a league with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.”

Context:In this verse, Abner, the commander of Saul’s army, visits David, who had been anointed as the next king of Israel. Abner offers to gather all of Israel and make a league with David, establishing him as the ruler over all that his heart desires. David accepts Abner’s offer and sends him away in peace.

The importance of unity:Abner’s proposal to gather all of Israel and make a league with David highlights the significance of unity among God’s people. David desired to reign over all of Israel, and Abner’s offer represented a step towards achieving that goal. Unity is crucial for the success of God’s purposes, and when His people come together, great things can be accomplished.

God’s sovereignty and David’s heart:The verse mentions that David would reign over all that his heart desires. It’s important to note that David’s desires were aligned with God’s will. Throughout his life, David sought after God’s heart and desired to honour Him in all his actions. As a result, God granted him success and fulfilled many of his desires. This verse reminds us of the importance of aligning our hearts with God’s will and seeking His purposes above our own.

The pursuit of peace:When David accepted Abner’s offer, he sent him away in peace. This demonstrates David’s commitment to pursuing peace and reconciliation rather than further conflict. Despite the previous enmity between David and Saul’s forces, David was willing to extend forgiveness and seek peaceful alliances. As followers of Christ, we are called to be peacemakers and to seek reconciliation with others.

Application:From this verse, we can learn several practical lessons. We should prioritise unity among believers, recognising that when we come together in harmony, we can accomplish great things for God’s kingdom. It is essential to align our hearts with God’s will and seek His purposes above our own desires. We should also be committed to pursuing peace and forgiveness, even in difficult circumstances, as this reflects the character of Christ.

Remember, studying the Bible is an ongoing process, and there are often deeper layers of meaning and application to explore. It’s beneficial to read the surrounding verses and consider the historical context to gain a comprehensive understanding of the passage.
