2 Samuel 10:19

Listen to this article

“And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon anymore.”

Context:In this verse, we find a reference to a battle between Israel and its enemies, particularly the Ammonites and the Syrians. Hadarezer was the king of Zobah, a kingdom located in present-day Syria. This battle took place during the reign of King David, who sought to expand and secure the borders of Israel.

Victory of Israel:The verse states that the kings who served Hadarezer saw that they were defeated by Israel. This indicates that Israel achieved a significant victory in this battle. The Israelites were known for their military strength under King David’s leadership, and this victory further established their dominance over the surrounding nations.

Peace and Service:As a result of their defeat, the kings who were servants to Hadarezer made peace with Israel and became their servants. This means that they submitted themselves to Israel’s authority and served them. This outcome reflects the power and influence of Israel in the region.

Fear of the Syrians:The verse also mentions that the Syrians (or Arameans) were afraid to help the Ammonites any longer. This fear can be attributed to Israel’s display of military strength and the defeat of their allies. The Syrians realised that supporting the Ammonites would likely result in their own defeat, so they refrained from offering further assistance.

Lessons for us:This passage highlights the consequences of engaging in war against God’s chosen people. It demonstrates the fulfilment of God’s promise to bless those who bless Israel and curse those who curse Israel (Genesis 12:3). Additionally, it reminds us of the importance of seeking peace and avoiding unnecessary conflicts.

God’s faithfulness:Throughout the Bible, we see God’s faithfulness to His people. In this verse, God’s faithfulness is evident through the victory He granted to Israel. As believers, we can find encouragement in knowing that God fights on our behalf when we trust in Him and follow His ways.

In conclusion, 2 Samuel 10:19 portrays Israel’s victory over its enemies and the subsequent establishment of peace and servitude. It reminds us of the consequences of opposing God’s chosen people and highlights God’s faithfulness to His promises.
