2 Samuel 11:24

And the shooters shot from off the wall upon thy servants; and some of the king’s servants be dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.

2 Samuel 11:24 (KJV)

This verse closes a dark chapter in King David’s life. In 2 Samuel 11:1-23, David saw Bathsheba, committed adultery with her, and then tried to hide her pregnancy. When her husband Uriah refused to go home from battle, David arranged for Uriah to be placed in the fiercest fighting. The messenger now reports that the attack on Rabbah failed: archers on the wall shot down, some of the king’s servants died, and Uriah the Hittite was killed.

The report is carefully worded. It blames the enemy and the circumstances, but it hides David’s own command. Yet the truth is clear: Uriah’s death was not an accident of war. David had ordered Joab to put Uriah in the hottest battle and then withdraw from him (2 Samuel 11:15). The phrase “thy servant Uriah” repeats, reminding us of the bond between king and soldier, which makes David’s betrayal even worse.

Uriah’s loyalty stands in sharp contrast to David’s deceit. Earlier, Uriah refused to enjoy home while his comrades were at war (2 Samuel 11:11). Now his integrity costs him his life. This event sets the stage for Nathan’s confrontation, where David’s sin will be exposed. The verse shows how sin multiplies: adultery leads to deception, and deception leads to murder.

This passage warns us about the destructive power of unconfessed sin. Even a man after God’s own heart fell into this trap. Sin never stays private; it harms innocent people. We must examine our own motives and resist the small compromises that lead to greater wrongs. When we fail, we need genuine repentance and reliance on God’s grace, not cover-ups.

God sees through every carefully worded report. No scheme can hide our actions from Him. Yet the gospel offers hope: David later repented and received mercy. The same grace is available to us when we turn from sin and trust in God’s forgiveness.
