“And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and make thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand.”

This verse is part of the narrative of the tragic events that unfolded within King David’s family. To better understand the context of this verse, let’s explore the surrounding verses and the overall story.

In the preceding chapters of 2 Samuel, we learn about David’s son, Amnon, who had developed an unhealthy desire for his half-sister Tamar. Amnon’s friend Jonadab, who was known for his cunning nature, advised him on how to approach his desire. In verse 5, Jonadab gives Amnon a deceptive plan to entice Tamar to his quarters.

Here are a few key points to consider in this Bible study:

  • Deception and manipulation:Jonadab plays a significant role in this passage by devising a deceptive plan for Amnon. He encourages Amnon to feign illness, seeking to manipulate both his father and Tamar. This plan ultimately leads to tragedy and further illustrates the destructive consequences of deceit and manipulation.
  • The violation of God’s commandments:The relationship between Amnon and Tamar was incestuous, going against God’s clear commandments regarding sexual relationships within a family. This passage serves as a somber reminder of the severe consequences that arise when individuals disregard God’s moral laws.
  • The misuse of power:Amnon, as the eldest son of David, held a position of authority and power. However, he abuses this authority by violating Tamar and disregarding her feelings and dignity. This event highlights the importance of using power responsibly and with respect for others.
  • The consequences of sin:The tragic aftermath of this story is a testament to the far‑reaching consequences of sin. Not only does this incident deeply affect Tamar and her relationship with her brother, but it also leads to a series of violent events, revenge, and division within David’s family.

This passage offers profound insights into the consequences of deceit, manipulation, and the abuse of power. It serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us to live according to God’s moral standards and to treat others with respect and dignity.

As we study this verse and its surrounding context, we can draw important lessons about the importance of honesty, integrity, and righteousness in our own lives. It also highlights the need for accountability and the awareness of the potential consequences of our actions.
