Listen to this article

Then the king answered and said vnto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall aske thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speake. 2 Samuel 14:18 (KJV)

In this passage King David is approached by a woman from Tekoa who comes to him with a plea. She tells a fictional story to capture the king’s attention and gain his help. The purpose of her visit is to persuade David to reconcile with his son Absalom, who had been banished after killing his half‑brother Amnon for raping their sister Tamar.

The passage highlights the importance of seeking resolution and reconciliation in broken relationships. Joab sent the woman from Tekoa to speak on behalf of Absalom, recognizing the need for restoration and healing within the family. It serves as a reminder that we should strive for reconciliation and forgiveness whenever possible.

When David asks the woman not to hide anything from him, she responds with humility and openness, giving him the freedom to ask whatever he wants. Her response shows the value of honesty and transparency when addressing important matters. It encourages us to approach God and others with sincerity and humility, not hiding anything but being willing to face the truth.

King David’s response to the woman from Tekoa demonstrates the significance of attentive listening. Despite being the king and having many demands on his time, David gives his full attention to the woman’s plea. Listening attentively is a vital aspect of effective communication and understanding, and it teaches us to be present and engaged when others share their concerns or seek our advice.

The woman from Tekoa effectively communicates her message to David by presenting a relatable and emotional story. Her storytelling approach serves as a reminder of the power of effective communication, as it engages the listener and helps convey important messages. It encourages us to consider the most effective ways to communicate our thoughts, concerns, and requests to others.

The passage from 2 Samuel 14:18 teaches us several valuable lessons. It encourages us to seek reconciliation and resolution in broken relationships, emphasizing the importance of forgiveness and healing. It reminds us to approach God and others with humility and honesty, being open and transparent in our communication. It also highlights the significance of attentive listening and effective communication in our interactions. As we reflect on these lessons, we can ask ourselves: Are there broken relationships in our lives that need reconciliation? How can we take steps toward healing and forgiveness? Are we approaching God and others with humility and honesty? How can we improve our listening skills and be more present when others share their concerns? Are we communicating our thoughts and requests effectively? By applying these principles we can foster healthier relationships, promote understanding, and communicate more effectively with those around us.
