2 Samuel 14:20

To fetch about this form of speech hath thy servant Joab done this thing: and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.

2 Samuel 14:20 (KJV)

Joab, David’s military commander, sent a wise woman from Tekoa to the king. He wanted David to welcome back Absalom, who had fled after killing his brother Amnon. The woman told a parable about two brothers to soften David’s heart. In this verse she admits that Joab planned the whole approach.

The phrase “to fetch about this form of speech” means Joab arranged this indirect way of speaking. The woman’s praise of David’s wisdom as “the wisdom of an angel of God” is a respectful exaggeration. It does not mean David knew everything like God. It shows that David could see through the scheme and understand the real issue behind the story. This comparison honors the king’s discernment, not divine knowledge.

Earlier in 2 Samuel 14:19, David asked the woman directly if Joab was behind her words, and she confirmed it. This verse completes that exchange. The comparison to an angel highlights David’s God-given discernment as king, not divine knowledge. It also shows how God can use human schemes to bring about His purposes, even when the methods are not perfect.

God can work through human plans, even imperfect ones, to bring about reconciliation. Joab’s method was deceptive, yet it led David toward mercy. Believers can learn that wise counsel and honest confrontation, when guided by truth, may restore broken relationships. The woman’s final honesty shows that truthfulness matters, even in a clever plan. We should speak truthfully and seek reconciliation, trusting God to work through our efforts.

True wisdom in leadership includes seeing the heart of a matter and choosing mercy over strict justice. David’s discernment, praised here, pointed to the greater wisdom of God, who knows all things and restores the lost. As we face difficult situations, we can ask God for that same wisdom to guide our decisions and relationships.
