2 Samuel 14:21

And the king said unto Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man Absalom again.

2 Samuel 14:21 (KJV)

Absalom fled to Geshur after killing his half-brother Amnon, who had raped their sister Tamar. David, though grieved, did not bring Absalom back. Joab, the army commander, saw that the king longed for his son and used a wise woman from Tekoa to persuade David to reconcile (2 Samuel 14:1-20). Here David grants Joab’s request.

David says, “Behold now, I have done this thing.” He accepts responsibility for the decision to bring Absalom home. The phrase “the young man Absalom” shows David’s tender view of his son, seeing him as still capable of change. David’s command to Joab reveals his trust in Joab’s judgment and influence. Some Hebrew manuscripts read “thou hast done this thing,” which would make Joab acknowledge David’s action. Either way, the king’s authority to pardon is clear.

This act of restoration echoes God’s willingness to forgive and restore sinners who repent. Yet the narrative warns that forgiveness without addressing the underlying sin can lead to further trouble. Absalom’s return does not bring true repentance; it later leads to rebellion (2 Samuel 15). The greater reconciliation is found in Christ, who brings true peace between God and humanity.

David’s compassion challenges us to seek reconciliation in broken relationships, even when the offense is severe. But true restoration requires honesty about sin and a change of heart. We can use wise intermediaries, as Joab did, to help heal divisions. We must also remember that forgiveness does not mean ignoring justice or the need for repentance.

Consider a relationship that needs restoration. Are you willing to take the first step, as David did? Ask God for wisdom to pursue reconciliation with both grace and truth, and for the humility to admit when you have done wrong. Trust that God, who reconciles us through Christ, can heal even the deepest family wounds.
