2 Samuel 14:27

Listen to this article

“And unto Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair countenance.”

Context:The book of 2 Samuel chronicles the reign of King David over Israel. In this particular chapter, Absalom, David’s son, had been estranged from his father due to a series of events. Absalom was eventually allowed to return to Jerusalem but was not permitted to see King David. This verse briefly mentions Absalom’s family.

Absalom’s Sons:The verse tells us that Absalom had three sons. Although the names of his sons are not mentioned here, it highlights the fact that Absalom had a family of his own. This information is significant because it emphasises that Absalom had descendants and suggests a potential claim to the throne in the future.

Absalom’s Daughter Tamar:The verse also mentions Absalom’s daughter, Tamar. She is described as a woman of fair countenance, which means she was beautiful. Tamar’s name is the same as her deceased half-sister, who was tragically violated by her half-brother Amnon. This connection could be a reminder of the pain and dysfunction within David’s family, as Absalom sought revenge for his sister’s abuse.

Themes and Lessons:This verse does not explicitly convey a theological message but provides insight into Absalom’s personal life and family. However, it serves as a reminder of the consequences of sin and the brokenness within David’s household. It highlights the complexity of relationships and the ripple effects of past actions. Additionally, it demonstrates that beauty alone does not guarantee happiness or protection from difficulties.

Overall, 2 Samuel 14:27 provides a glimpse into Absalom’s family and the turmoil within David’s lineage. It prompts us to consider the consequences of our actions and the importance of fostering healthy relationships within our families.
