2 Samuel 15:24
And loe, Zadok also, and all the Leuites were with him, bearing the Arke of the Couenant of God, and they set downe the Arke of God; and Abiathar went vp, vntill all the people had done passing out of the citie. 2 Samuel 15:24 (KJV)
This verse is part of a narrative recounting Absalom’s rebellion against King David. Absalom, David’s son, conspired against his father and gained widespread support in Israel. When Absalom moved to seize Jerusalem, David realized the seriousness of the situation and decided to leave the city.
In this verse, Zadok the priest, together with all the Levites, is mentioned as being with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God and setting down the ark of God. They were responsible for carrying the ark of the covenant, which symbolized God’s presence among the Israelites and contained the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments.
The phrase “bearing the ark of the covenant of God” underscores the sacredness of the ark, a vessel containing the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments and representing the covenant between God and His people. Its presence signified God’s dwelling among them, and Zadok and the Levites carrying the ark demonstrated God’s continued presence with David amid turmoil.
The verse also notes Abiathar, another priest, who went up—likely ascending the Mount of Olives—as the people evacuated the city. Abiathar went up until all the people had done passing out of the city, though the text does not specify his exact role in the evacuation.
Overall, this passage highlights the faithfulness of Zadok, the Levites, and Abiathar to God and to David, emphasizing their commitment to sacred duties even in political upheaval. It serves as a reminder to remain faithful to God and His covenant during adversity, trusting in His presence and guidance through every circumstance.
