2 Samuel 15:32

And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head:

2 Samuel 15:32 (KJV)

Absalom’s rebellion forces King David to flee Jerusalem. As David climbs the Mount of Olives, he reaches the summit, a place where God was worshiped. Despite his distress, he stops to worship the Lord. This act shows that even in crisis, David’s devotion remains steadfast.

David’s worship is not mere ritual; it is a genuine expression of dependence on God. The location itself is significant, for the top of the mount was a known place of prayer. In his darkest hour, David turns to God, demonstrating that true worship flows from trust, not from comfortable circumstances.

At that moment, Hushai the Archite arrives. His torn coat and earth upon his head are traditional signs of mourning and grief. These outward actions express his deep solidarity with David’s sorrow and his loyalty to the king. Hushai’s presence is a tangible reminder that God provides comfort through faithful companions.

This encounter sets the stage for Hushai’s later role in thwarting Ahithophel’s counsel, answering David’s prayer in the previous verse. The worship at the summit may also be connected to Psalm 3, titled “A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son,” which expresses trust in God despite many enemies.

Believers are encouraged to seek God in worship when challenges arise. Like David, we can turn to God in prayer and praise even when circumstances are dire. Like Hushai, we are urged to stand beside those in need, offering encouragement and practical help.

This verse reminds us that worship is both a personal act and a shared experience. David worships alone, yet God sends Hushai to meet him. In our trials, we can trust that God sees our devotion and provides support through others. The Mount of Olives, a place of prayer and significant biblical events, becomes a model for turning to God in all circumstances.
