2 Samuel 15:37

So Hushai David’s friend came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.

2 Samuel 15:37 (KJV)

Absalom, David’s son, had won the hearts of Israel and planned to take the throne. David fled Jerusalem to avoid bloodshed. Before leaving, he sent his loyal friend Hushai back into the city to pretend to serve Absalom and to report on the rebellion through the priests Zadok and Abiathar (2 Samuel 15:32-36). This verse records the moment when both Hushai and Absalom entered Jerusalem.

Hushai’s entry was not accidental. He obeyed David’s command and risked his life to help his king. Absalom entered the city as a conqueror, but Hushai entered as a hidden servant. Their simultaneous arrival shows God’s timing: Hushai was present when Absalom arrived, ready to carry out his mission. This timing was providential, allowing Hushai to be in place without Absalom knowing he had been with David.

Later, Absalom questioned Hushai’s loyalty (2 Samuel 16:17), but Hushai’s counsel would overturn Ahithophel’s advice and protect David (2 Samuel 17). This shows how God used one faithful friend to change the course of events. Hushai’s presence was noticed, and he had to maintain his cover. His risky obedience set the stage for God’s deliverance.

Believers today may be called to serve faithfully in difficult or dangerous places. Loyalty to God and to His people often requires courage and sacrifice. Like Hushai, we can trust that God works behind the scenes, even when we do not see the full picture. God uses faithful individuals to accomplish His purposes, even in times of crisis.

Hushai’s friendship points to a greater friend, Jesus Christ, who intercedes for His people. While Hushai risked his life for David, Christ gave His life for us. This verse encourages us to be faithful in small and hidden tasks, knowing that God sees and rewards every act of loyalty.
