“And when David was a little past the top of the hill, behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of asses saddled, and upon them two hundred loaves of bread, and an hundred bunches of raisins, and an hundred of summer fruits, and a bottle of wine.”

Context:To fully understand this verse, it’s important to consider the context. David, the anointed king of Israel, faced a rebellion led by his own son, Absalom. As David fled from Jerusalem to escape Absalom’s forces, he encountered various individuals who either supported or opposed him. Ziba was a servant of Mephibosheth, the son of David’s close friend Jonathan.

David’s encounter with Ziba:As David was passing the top of a hill during his journey, he met Ziba. Ziba had prepared a generous provision of food and drink to support David and his men in their time of distress. The provisions included two hundred loaves of bread, a hundred bunches of raisins, a hundred summer fruits, and a bottle of wine.

Ziba’s act of kindness:Ziba’s action of meeting David with supplies demonstrated his loyalty and support for the king. In a time of crisis, Ziba went out of his way to ensure that David and his men had sustenance during their journey. This act of kindness and provision was significant as David and his followers were weary and hungry from their flight.

Symbolism:This passage symbolizes the importance of support and loyalty, even in challenging times. Ziba’s actions serve as a reminder of the significance of standing with and aiding those in need, particularly leaders or individuals who face adversity. It also highlights the idea of providence, as God provided for David’s needs through Ziba’s generosity.

Application:This verse encourages us to cultivate a heart of kindness and support for others, especially when they are going through difficult circumstances. It reminds us to be attentive to the needs of others and to extend a helping hand in times of crisis. Just as Ziba supported David, we can offer practical assistance, encouragement, and prayers to those around us who may be facing challenges.

Further study:To gain a deeper understanding of this passage, you may want to explore the subsequent events in 2 Samuel that relate to David’s encounters during his flight from Absalom. Additionally, you can study the broader themes of loyalty, provision, and acts of kindness throughout the Bible, which highlight the character of God and the principles we can apply in our own lives.

Remember to read the entire chapter and surrounding chapters to grasp the full context and narrative of David’s experiences during this period.
