2 Samuel 17:4

And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel. 2 Samuel 17:4 (KJV)

At this point in the narrative Absalom, the son of King David, has risen in rebellion against his father and is determined to seize the throne. He has gathered the support of influential figures, most notably Ahithophel, David’s former counselor. In chapter 17 Ahithophel presents a strategy for defeating David’s forces. Verse 4 records that the counsel given by Ahithophel pleased Absalom and the elders of Israel. The plan called for an immediate pursuit of David, striking while he was vulnerable, in order to catch him off guard and eliminate the threat.

The verse highlights Absalom’s reliance on human wisdom rather than seeking God’s guidance. He is swayed by the favorable response of those around him, showing a lack of discernment and a dependence on counsel that is not rooted in divine direction. The danger of following such ungodly advice becomes evident as the narrative unfolds; the decision to act on Ahithophel’s recommendation leads to dire consequences for Absalom and his rebellion.

The account serves as a sobering reminder for believers today. While seeking advice from others can be valuable, it is essential to compare every piece of counsel with the principles and teachings of God’s Word. Proverbs 19:21 (KJV) declares, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” This truth urges us to submit our decisions to God’s will, ensuring that our choices align with His purposes rather than merely human ambition.

In conclusion, 2 Samuel 17:4 illustrates Absalom’s willingness to accept Ahithophel’s advice without weighing it against God’s will. The passage calls us to pursue divine wisdom, to test all counsel against Scripture, and to trust that the Lord’s purpose will ultimately stand above any human scheme.
