2 Samuel 17:4

“And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.”

Context:Before diving into the specific verse, it is essential to understand the context. At this point in the narrative, Absalom, the son of King David, has rebelled against his father and seeks to overthrow him and take the throne. Absalom has gained support from various influential people, including Ahithophel, David’s former counselor. In 2 Samuel 17, Ahithophel advises Absalom on how to defeat David’s forces.

Absalom’s decision:In verse 4, we learn that the advice given by Ahithophel pleased Absalom and the elders of Israel. Ahithophel suggests a plan to pursue David immediately and attack him while he is vulnerable. The plan involves a swift pursuit to catch David off guard and eliminate the threat.

Absalom’s reliance on human wisdom:This verse highlights Absalom’s reliance on the counsel of Ahithophel and the elders of Israel. Instead of seeking God’s guidance or considering the potential consequences of his actions, Absalom is swayed by the favourable response of those around him. This demonstrates a lack of discernment and a dependence on human wisdom alone.

The danger of following ungodly advice:Although the advice given by Ahithophel may have seemed appealing to Absalom, it was ultimately contrary to God’s will. Ahithophel’s counsel sought to capitalise on the immediate advantage rather than waiting for God’s timing. As we continue reading the narrative, we see that this decision leads to dire consequences for Absalom and his rebellion.

Lessons for us:The account in 2 Samuel 17:4 serves as a reminder for us to seek God’s wisdom and guidance in all our decisions. While seeking advice from others can be helpful, we must remember that not all counsel aligns with God’s purposes. It is crucial to compare the advice we receive with the principles and teachings of God’s Word. Proverbs 19:21 reminds us, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”

In conclusion, 2 Samuel 17:4 highlights Absalom’s willingness to accept Ahithophel’s advice without considering its alignment with God’s will. This verse serves as a lesson for us to seek God’s wisdom and discernment in our own decision-making processes, ensuring that we align our choices with His purposes and teachings.
