And Hushai said vnto Absalom, The counsell that Ahithophel hath giuen, is not good at this time. 2 Samuel 17:7 (KJV)

Context: 2 Samuel 17 records the rebellion of King David’s son Absalom, who prepares to go to war against his father. In seeking advice, Absalom consults his counselors, including Ahithophel, renowned for his wise counsel, and Hushai, a loyal friend of David. Ahithophel offers a recommendation, but Hushai intervenes with a contrary perspective.

Key Themes and Points:

Counsel and Wisdom – The verse underscores the importance of evaluating counsel in light of the present circumstances. Although Ahithophel’s advice was highly regarded, Hushai points out that it is not suitable for the current situation, reminding believers that even wise counsel must be weighed against the specific context.

Divine Intervention – Some readers understand Hushai’s opposition as a form of divine influence, believing that God guided Hushai to counter Ahithophel’s plan and thereby protect David’s interests. This reflects the conviction that God can direct decisions even amid conflict.

Timing and Circumstances – Hushai’s remark highlights the need to consider timing when making decisions. What may have been appropriate at one moment may not fit another, emphasizing discernment and the assessment of advice according to the situation at hand.

Loyalty and Strategy – Hushai’s action demonstrates his loyalty to David. By challenging Ahithophel’s counsel, he strategically hampers Absalom’s plans and buys time for David to gather his forces, showing the value of strategic thinking in challenging circumstances.

Application:

Seek Godly Counsel – When faced with important decisions, seek counsel from trusted individuals who have a relationship with God and possess wisdom and experience. Their insight can help discern the best course of action.

Discern the Timing – Evaluate the timing and circumstances surrounding a decision. What was appropriate in the past may not be suitable now; pray for wisdom to discern the right moment and approach.

Trust in Divine Guidance – Recognize that God can intervene in our lives, guiding decisions and protecting interests. Depend on His sovereignty through prayer and the study of Scripture.

Loyalty and Strategy – Display loyalty to those in authority and consider strategic approaches to challenges. Acting with wisdom and integrity can positively affect outcomes.

Remember, this study offers a brief overview of the verse and its context. Further exploration of the passage and consultation of additional resources and commentaries can deepen understanding of the biblical text.
