2 Samuel 17:19

Posted on 18 May at 11:21

And the woman tooke and spread a couering ouer the welles mouth, and spread ground corne thereon; and the thing was not knowen. 2 Samuel 17:19 (KJV)

This verse is part of the narrative in 2 Samuel that recounts the events surrounding Absalom’s rebellion against King David. In this particular verse, a wise woman from the city of Bahurim plays a crucial role in helping David’s loyal supporters escape from Absalom’s pursuit.

Resourcefulness and Wisdom: The woman from Bahurim demonstrates resourcefulness and wisdom by spreading a covering over the well’s mouth and then scattering ground corn on top. By doing so, she cleverly conceals the well, making it appear as though the ground corn is simply scattered grain rather than a covering for the well. This act helps to protect David’s loyal supporters who were hiding in the well.

Creative Problem-Solving: In times of crisis, it is essential to think creatively and find innovative solutions. The woman’s actions showcase her ability to think on her feet and come up with a plan to deceive Absalom’s forces. Her actions buy precious time for David’s supporters, allowing them to escape safely.

Courageous Acts: The woman’s actions demonstrate bravery and courage. By aiding David’s loyal supporters, she risks retribution from Absalom and his forces. However, she chooses to stand on the side of justice and righteousness, showing her willingness to put herself at risk to protect the innocent.

God’s Providence: Although the verse does not explicitly mention God, we can see God’s providence at work in this situation. God uses the woman’s wisdom and resourcefulness as instruments to protect David’s supporters. This event is part of God’s plan to preserve David’s kingdom and fulfil His promises.

Lessons on Protection and Safety: The woman’s actions highlight the importance of finding shelter and protection during times of danger. The well serves as a hiding place, demonstrating the significance of seeking refuge when facing threats. In a spiritual sense, believers can find refuge in God, who is our stronghold and fortress in times of trouble.

The Power of Deception: While the woman’s actions were motivated by a desire to protect innocent lives, it is essential to note that the act involved deception. The Bible teaches us to be people of truth and integrity, cautioning against deceitful practices. This verse does not explicitly endorse or condemn the woman’s actions, but it reminds us to consider the ethical implications of our choices.

As with any passage from the Bible, it is crucial to study the surrounding verses and the context to gain a deeper understanding of the passage’s significance. 2 Samuel 17 provides further details about the events leading up to and following this verse, shedding light on the broader narrative of David’s reign and Absalom’s rebellion.
