“Then said Joab to Cushi, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And Cushi bowed himself unto Joab, and ran.”

Context:This verse is part of the account of the rebellion led by David’s son Absalom against his father. Absalom sought to overthrow David and take the kingdom for himself. As David’s loyal general, Joab was leading the royal forces against Absalom’s rebellion.

  • Joab’s Instructions:In this verse, we see Joab giving instructions to Cushi, one of his messengers. Joab tells Cushi to go and inform King David about what he had witnessed. Joab understood the importance of keeping the king informed about the ongoing battle and its progress.
  • The Messenger’s Obedience:Cushi promptly obeys Joab’s command and bows himself before Joab as a sign of respect. He then runs to deliver the message to the king. Cushi’s obedience and efficiency in carrying out Joab’s instruction demonstrate his loyalty and dedication to his role as a messenger.

Lessons and Application:

  • Importance of Communication:Joab’s instruction to Cushi highlights the significance of communication, especially during times of conflict or crisis. It is crucial to keep leaders informed about significant developments, allowing them to make informed decisions.
  • Faithful Service:Cushi’s obedience and prompt action demonstrate the importance of faithfulness and diligence in carrying out one’s responsibilities. Regardless of our position or task, we should strive to fulfill our duties with dedication and loyalty.
  • Respect for Authority:Cushi’s act of bowing before Joab reflects a respectful attitude towards authority. As Christians, we are called to honour and respect those in leadership positions, acknowledging their authority and submitting to their guidance (Romans 13:1-2).
  • Trusting God in Difficult Times:The entire account of Absalom’s rebellion is a reminder that even in times of turmoil and challenges, we can trust in God’s sovereignty. David, despite the trials he faced, trusted in God’s protection and deliverance. As we face our own trials, we should seek to trust in God’s faithfulness and rely on Him for guidance and strength.
  • The Importance of Service:Joab’s role as a general and Cushi’s role as a messenger exemplify the importance of service to others. In the Christian life, we are called to serve one another, just as Jesus came to serve (Mark 10:45). Whether in leadership positions or supporting roles, we should be willing to serve others selflessly.
