2 Samuel 19:27

Listen to this article

“But my servant Ziba deceived me: for he hath slandered thy servant unto my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thine eyes.”

In this verse, Mephibosheth, the grandson of King Saul and the son of Jonathan, is speaking to King David. To understand the context of this verse, let’s explore the surrounding events:

Relationship between David and Mephibosheth:Prior to these events, David had shown kindness and grace to Mephibosheth, despite the enmity between David and Saul’s family. Mephibosheth was crippled in both feet, and David invited him to eat at his table as a member of the royal court, ensuring his care and provision.

Absalom’s rebellion:Absalom, one of David’s sons, rebelled against him, attempting to seize the throne. During this tumultuous time, Mephibosheth’s servant, Ziba, claimed that Mephibosheth had abandoned David and supported Absalom’s cause.

David’s return to Jerusalem:After Absalom’s rebellion was quashed, David prepared to return to Jerusalem as the legitimate king. Mephibosheth met David as he crossed the Jordan River, expressing his loyalty and explaining that Ziba had deceived him by misrepresenting his actions.

Deception and slander:Mephibosheth acknowledges that his servant, Ziba, deceived him by spreading false information about him to David. This reminds us of the destructive nature of deception and slander. It is crucial to be cautious and discerning when evaluating information and to seek the truth before passing judgment.

David’s character:Mephibosheth recognizes David’s noble character, referring to him as “an angel of God.” Despite the false accusations against Mephibosheth, he trusts in David’s fairness and justice. David’s reputation as a righteous leader is reaffirmed through this verse. It teaches us the importance of maintaining integrity and being just in our interactions with others.

Submitting to the king’s decision:Mephibosheth humbly defers to King David, saying, “do therefore what is good in thine eyes.” This reflects an attitude of submission and trust in the king’s judgment. Similarly, as believers, we are called to trust in God’s wisdom and sovereignty, submitting our lives to His will and acknowledging that His ways are higher than ours.

Seeking reconciliation:Mephibosheth’s encounter with David presents an opportunity for reconciliation. Despite the misunderstanding caused by Ziba’s deceit, Mephibosheth takes the initiative to clarify the situation and restore his relationship with David. It reminds us of the importance of pursuing reconciliation and resolving conflicts in our own lives.

In conclusion, 2 Samuel 19:27 reveals the consequences of deception and the importance of truth. It highlights the noble character of King David and the need for trust in God’s judgment. It also encourages us to seek reconciliation and maintain a humble and submissive heart before God and authority figures in our lives.
