And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem.

Context

This verse comes after Absalom’s rebellion, when David had been forced to flee Jerusalem. Now returning to the throne, he crosses the Jordan. Barzillai, a wealthy and aged Gileadite, had supported David during his exile at Mahanaim by providing food and supplies (2 Samuel 17:27-29). That earlier help explains why David now invites him to Jerusalem.

Meaning

David’s words “Come thou over with me” are a personal invitation. He promises to “feed” Barzillai, meaning to sustain him, provide for him, and let him eat at the king’s table. This was a great honor, a reciprocal gesture of gratitude for Barzillai’s loyalty and generosity.
