2 Samuel 22:13

Through the brightness before him were coals of fire kindled.

2 Samuel 22:13 (KJV)

This verse belongs to David’s song of praise after God delivered him from his enemies, including King Saul. The song appears in 2 Samuel 22 and closely parallels Psalm 18. David speaks as one who has seen God act with power, and his words are poetry, not a cold list of doctrines. This song is often called David’s Song of Deliverance.

“Brightness before him” points to the radiant presence of God. His glory shines so intensely that it cannot be hidden. “Coals of fire kindled” show that this brightness carries heat and power. Fire in Scripture often stands for God’s holiness, judgment, and cleansing. Here the burning coals picture God’s anger against evil and His readiness to defend His servant. The verse describes a theophany, a visible display of God’s majestic presence.

The same picture of fire around God appears when He met Israel at Sinai, as in Exodus 19 and Deuteronomy 4. There, fire showed His holiness and the seriousness of His covenant. In this verse, the fire serves a similar purpose: God’s holy presence moves against His enemies and rescues the one who trusts Him. His brightness and fire bring judgment on the wicked and deliverance for His servant.

David’s words teach us to approach God with reverence. His presence is not distant or weak; it is alive, holy, and able to act. When we face trouble, we can call on Him, knowing that His brightness and fire are on our side. We do not need to fear those who oppose us when the God of glory fights for us. This truth calls for awe and trust in His mighty power.

This verse invites us to trust in God’s power, not in our own strength. His holiness is not a threat to His people; it is their protection. Let us thank Him for being a mighty deliverer, and let us live in awe of His presence.
