1 Kings 1:37

Posted on 18 May at 11:34

“As the LORD hath been with my lord the king, even so be He with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.”

This verse is part of the narrative in 1 Kings where King David is nearing the end of his life, and his son Adonijah tries to seize the throne. However, the prophet Nathan and the loyal supporters of David, including Bathsheba, intervene to ensure that Solomon, David’s chosen successor, becomes the next king of Israel.

Context:In the preceding verses, Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon, approaches King David to remind him of his promise to make Solomon king after him. Adonijah, David’s eldest surviving son, had already declared himself king, but he was not David’s chosen heir. Bathsheba seeks David’s confirmation of Solomon as the rightful successor.

Acknowledging God’s presence:The verse begins with Bathsheba acknowledging that the Lord had been with David, emphasising God’s presence and guidance in David’s life as the king of Israel. She expresses the desire for God to continue being with Solomon in the same way, recognising the importance of God’s presence and favour in the life of a king.

Making Solomon’s throne greater:Bathsheba’s request is for God to make Solomon’s throne greater than the throne of David. This is not a request for Solomon to have more power or authority than David, but rather a recognition of the greatness and significance of Solomon’s future reign. It is a prayer for God to bless and exalt Solomon, enabling him to rule with wisdom, righteousness, and prosperity.

Implications:By requesting God’s favour and blessings upon Solomon, Bathsheba demonstrates her faith and trust in God’s sovereignty. She recognises that the success of Solomon’s reign is ultimately in God’s hands. Bathsheba’s request also aligns with David’s earlier declaration in 1 Chronicles 29:23, where he prays that God would establish Solomon’s kingdom and make it exceedingly great.

Application:This verse reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s presence and favour in our lives and the lives of those in positions of authority. It encourages us to pray for our leaders, that they may have God’s guidance and blessings in their responsibilities. Additionally, it highlights the significance of recognising and submitting to God’s sovereignty, trusting Him to establish and bless His chosen leaders.
