1 Kings 1:43

Listen to this article

“And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king.”

Divine appointment:The verse emphasises that Solomon’s kingship was not the result of human ambition or manipulation but a divine appointment. David, under the guidance of God, had chosen Solomon as his successor. This highlights the importance of seeking God’s will and relying on His guidance in matters of leadership and decision-making.

The importance of obedience:Adonijah’s attempt to seize the throne was in direct opposition to David’s intentions and God’s plan. Jonathan’s response reflects the significance of obedience to authority and respect for God-ordained leadership. It serves as a reminder that rebellion or self-promotion can lead to undesirable consequences, and it is crucial to align ourselves with God’s will and follow His appointed leaders.

God’s sovereignty in establishing kingship:The passage underscores God’s sovereignty in the affairs of human rulership. David’s role was pivotal in appointing Solomon as king, but ultimately, it was God who chose and established Solomon’s kingship. This highlights the overarching truth that all authority and power come from God and should be used in accordance with His purposes.

Fulfillment of God’s promise:The anointing of Solomon as king was a fulfillment of God’s promise to David. Earlier in 2 Samuel 7, God made a covenant with David, assuring him that his descendants would rule over Israel. The events in 1 Kings 1:43 mark the realisation of this promise. This emphasises God’s faithfulness to His word and the fulfilment of His plans in His timing.

In summary, 1 Kings 1:43 reveals the divine appointment of Solomon as king and highlights the importance of obedience, God’s sovereignty in establishing leadership, and the fulfilment of His promises. It encourages us to seek God’s will, submit to His authority, and trust in His faithfulness.
