“And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar”

Context:The book of 1 Kings recounts the history of Israel after the death of King David and the ascension of his son Solomon to the throne. In 1 Kings 1, we find the account of Adonijah’s attempt to seize the throne of Israel, leading to the intervention of the prophet Nathan and the loyal supporters of King David.

The significance of Adonijah’s action:Adonijah, one of David’s sons, had attempted to proclaim himself as king without David’s knowledge or approval. However, when he heard about Solomon’s anointing as the rightful successor to the throne, Adonijah became fearful. In ancient Israel, the horns of the altar were considered a place of refuge and sanctuary, where individuals seeking protection from the consequences of their actions could cling to in hope of finding mercy and deliverance.

Symbolism of the horns of the altar:The altar symbolized the presence of God and was a place where sacrifices were made to seek forgiveness and atonement. By clinging to the horns of the altar, Adonijah was essentially seeking God’s mercy and protection, acknowledging his fear and guilt.

Lessons we can learn:

  • Fear of consequences:Adonijah’s fear stemmed from his awareness that his actions had consequences. When we act in disobedience to God’s will, we should be conscious of the potential consequences of our choices.
  • Seeking refuge in God:Adonijah’s action of grabbing hold of the horns of the altar serves as a reminder that we, too, can find refuge in God when we are facing difficult or challenging situations. God is our refuge and strength, and we can turn to Him for comfort, protection, and forgiveness.
  • The importance of submission:Adonijah’s attempt to seize the throne was an act of rebellion against God’s chosen king. This incident teaches us the importance of submitting to God’s authority and recognizing His appointed leaders in our lives.
  • The mercy and forgiveness of God:Although Adonijah’s actions were sinful, his decision to cling to the horns of the altar showed his acknowledgment of his need for God’s mercy. Similarly, when we come before God in humility, acknowledging our sins and seeking forgiveness, He is faithful to extend His mercy and forgiveness to us.

Application:

  • Seek refuge in God:When facing fear or difficulty, turn to God for refuge and comfort. Pray, read His Word, and trust in His promises.
  • Submit to God’s authority:Recognize the importance of submitting to God’s authority and obeying His commands. Respect and honor the leaders and authorities God has placed in your life.
  • Repentance and forgiveness:Recognize your need for forgiveness and mercy. Confess your sins to God, seeking His forgiveness and turning away from sinful behavior.

Remember, 1 Kings 1:50 teaches us the importance of seeking refuge in God, acknowledging our need for His mercy, and submitting to His authority. By applying these lessons to our lives, we can grow in our relationship with God and experience His grace and forgiveness.
