Listen to this article

And king Solomon answered, and said vnto his mother, And why doest thou aske Abishag the Shunammite for Adoniiah? Aske for him the kingdome also (for he is mine elder brother) euen for him, and for Abiathar the Priest, & for Ioab the sonne of Zeruiah. 1 Kings 2:22 (KJV)

“Then King Solomon sware by the LORD, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life.”

“Then King Solomon said, ‘Thou hast spoken in my ears a word against my life, Adonijah.’”

This verse is part of a larger narrative in the book of 1 Kings, which describes the events surrounding the reign of King Solomon, the son of King David. To understand the context of 1 Kings 2:22, it’s helpful to look at the preceding verses.

In 1 Kings 2:13-21, Adonijah, the older brother of Solomon, approached Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon, with a request. Adonijah was vying for power and attempting to assert his claim to the throne. He asked Bathsheba to intercede with King Solomon on his behalf, requesting that Solomon give him Abishag as his wife. Abishag was a young woman who had taken care of King David in his old age.

When Bathsheba relayed Adonijah’s request to King Solomon, Solomon perceived it as a political move and an attempt by Adonijah to secure a power base. He saw it as a challenge to his authority as the rightful king. As a result, Solomon responded by declaring that Adonijah had spoken against his life, invoking the LORD’s judgment.

Solomon’s declaration expressed his conviction that Adonijah’s actions were treasonous and warranted punishment. By invoking the name of the LORD, Solomon underscored the seriousness of the matter. This reflected the belief that God would hold Adonijah accountable if his intentions were harmful or if he intended to undermine Solomon’s reign.

Context: 1 Kings 2:22 highlights Solomon’s firm resolve to maintain his authority and prevent any threats to his kingship. This verse demonstrates the political intrigue and power struggles within the royal family, emphasizing the importance of loyalty and submission to the king’s authority.

From a broader perspective, this passage can also serve as a reminder to individuals in positions of authority: it underscores the need to discern and address potential challenges to one’s leadership, while also affirming the principle that leaders are accountable for their actions before God.

In conclusion, 1 Kings 2:22 captures King Solomon’s response to Adonijah’s request and reflects the complex dynamics of power and loyalty within the royal family. It highlights the seriousness of threats to Solomon’s reign and the importance of maintaining authority in the face of such challenges.
