“And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;”

In this verse, we find God responding to King Solomon’s request for wisdom. To understand the context of this verse, let’s look at the preceding verses.

In 1 Kings 3:5-10, Solomon had a dream in which God appeared to him and said, “Ask what I shall give thee” (1 Kings 3:5, KJV). Solomon, recognizing his youth and inexperience in ruling over the great nation of Israel, humbly acknowledged his need for wisdom to govern God’s people effectively.

In his response, Solomon expressed his desire for an understanding heart or wisdom to discern judgment. He did not ask for personal gain such as long life, riches, or revenge against his enemies. Instead, he sought the ability to make wise decisions and govern with justice.

God’s response in 1 Kings 3:11 affirms Solomon’s request. God commends Solomon for not seeking selfish desires but instead desiring wisdom to govern justly. Let’s unpack some key lessons from this verse:

  • Humility before God:Solomon’s humble response to God’s question demonstrates his recognition of his limitations and his reliance on God’s wisdom. We, too, can approach God with humility, acknowledging our need for His guidance in all aspects of our lives.
  • Wisdom over material possessions:Solomon’s request reveals his understanding that wisdom is more valuable than material wealth. This highlights the importance of seeking wisdom and discernment in our own lives rather than being solely preoccupied with worldly possessions.
  • Seeking understanding to discern judgment:Solomon desired the ability to discern between right and wrong, good and evil, in order to govern justly. This emphasizes the importance of wisdom in making decisions that align with God’s principles and promote justice and righteousness.
  • God rewards genuine desires:God’s response to Solomon’s request demonstrates His willingness to grant sincere and selfless petitions. When we seek God with a genuine heart and prioritize His will above our own, He is pleased and may grant our requests according to His wisdom.

In conclusion, 1 Kings 3:11 teaches us about the value of wisdom, humility before God, and the importance of seeking understanding to discern right from wrong. It encourages us to prioritise spiritual growth and seek God’s wisdom in our decision-making processes.
