“My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon unto the sea: and I will convey them by sea in floats unto the place that thou shalt appoint me, and will cause them to be discharged there, and thou shalt receive them: and thou shalt accomplish my desire, in giving food for my household.”

This verse is part of a passage where King Solomon communicates with Hiram, the king of Tyre, in order to procure materials for the construction of the temple in Jerusalem. Solomon seeks to acquire cedar and cypress trees from Lebanon to be used in building the house of the Lord. In this verse, Solomon expresses his plan to have his servants transport the materials from Lebanon to the sea and then have them shipped by sea to the designated place.

  • Solomon’s initiative:This verse showcases Solomon’s proactive approach in carrying out his plans for the construction of the temple. He takes the responsibility to organize the transportation and delivery of the required materials.
  • Utilizing available resources:Solomon recognizes the abundant supply of quality timber in Lebanon, known for its cedars. By leveraging the resources available to him, he ensures that the temple will be constructed using the finest materials.
  • Coordination with Hiram:Solomon communicates with Hiram, who has expertise in shipping and maritime matters, to arrange for the transportation of the materials. This highlights the importance of collaboration and utilizing the skills and resources of others to accomplish significant tasks.
  • God’s provision:While not explicitly mentioned in this verse, it is important to note that God had granted Solomon wisdom and favour to accomplish the construction of the temple (1 Kings 3:5-14). God’s hand is evident in providing the necessary resources and facilitating the logistics to fulfil Solomon’s desire.
  • Dedication to God’s house:Solomon’s purpose in procuring these materials is to build a magnificent temple for the worship of God. The verse emphasizes his commitment to ensuring that the construction of the house of the Lord is accomplished according to his desires.

This verse reminds us of the importance of planning, utilising available resources, and seeking help from others when needed. It also highlights the significance of dedication and commitment to the tasks and projects that honour God.
