“And it was an hand breadth thick, and the brim thereof was wrought like the brim of a cup, with flowers of lilies: it contained two thousand baths.”

This verse specifically refers to the “molten sea,” a massive bronze basin that was placed in the courtyard of the temple. Here are some key points to consider in this Bible study:

The construction of the molten sea:The molten sea was a significant part of the temple’s furnishings. It was an enormous circular basin made of molten or cast bronze, measuring ten cubits in diameter (approximately 15 feet) and five cubits in height (approximately 7.5 feet). The thickness of its walls was a hand breadth, which is approximately four inches.

The design of the basin:The brim or rim of the molten sea was crafted in a decorative manner, resembling the brim of a cup. It featured a design of flowers, specifically lilies. This artistic touch added beauty to the basin’s overall appearance.

The purpose of the molten sea:The primary function of the molten sea was for the ritual cleansing of the priests. It served as a massive ceremonial basin for them to wash their hands and feet before entering the temple to perform their duties. The large size of the basin accommodated multiple priests simultaneously.

The capacity of the basin:The verse mentions that the molten sea contained two thousand baths. A “bath” was a unit of measurement for liquids in ancient Israel, equivalent to approximately 22 liters or 5.8 gallons. Therefore, the molten sea could hold around 40,000 litres or 10,500 gallons of water.

Symbolic and spiritual significance:The construction of the molten sea and its placement within the temple symbolized purity and holiness. The act of washing in the basin signified the cleansing of the priests from impurities, both physical and spiritual, before approaching God’s presence in the sanctuary.

It’s worth noting that the temple, including the molten sea, was part of the Old Testament ceremonial system and held significance in the religious practices of that time. Understanding the historical and cultural context helps us grasp the meaning behind these descriptions.

By studying this verse, we can gain insights into the meticulous design and significance of the temple’s furnishings, as well as the importance of ritual purity in the worship of God during the time of Solomon.
