1 Kings 8:24

Posted on 11 Feb at 16:44

Who hast kept with thy seruant Dauid my father that thou promisedst him: thou spakest also with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it with thine hand, as it is this day. 1 Kings 8:24 (KJV)

“And thou hast kept that which thou promisest unto thy servant David my father: thou hast both spoken with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it with thine hand, as it is this day.” This verse is part of the prayer of King Solomon offered at the dedication of the temple he built for the Lord in Jerusalem. Solomon’s prayer acknowledges God’s faithfulness in keeping the covenant He swore to David, his father.

God’s Promise to David – Solomon recalls the covenant recorded in 2 Samuel 7, in which God promised to establish David’s lineage and throne forever. The verse highlights that the promise made to David is still being honored.

God’s Faithfulness – Solomon emphasizes that God not only spoke the promise with His mouth but also fulfilled it with His hand. This underscores the trustworthiness of God’s word and His power to bring what He has declared to pass.

Continuing Promises – The prayer points out that the fulfillment is not confined to the past; it is evident “as it is this day.” The ongoing nature of God’s covenant demonstrates that His promises extend into the present and future.

The significance of this verse goes beyond its historical setting. It reveals key aspects of God’s character: His reliability, His covenant‑keeping nature, and His steadfast love for His people. The verse reminds believers that God’s word stands true through generations.

Application – As believers today we can find comfort and assurance in God’s proven faithfulness. Just as He kept His promises to David and to Solomon, He will also fulfill His promises to us. This encourages trust in God’s word, reliance on His faithfulness, and confidence that He will accomplish His plans and purposes in our lives.

In summary, 1 Kings 8:24 highlights God’s unwavering faithfulness in keeping the covenant with David, underscores the reliability of His word, and calls believers to trust that the same faithful God will fulfill the promises to each of us.
