1 Kings 11:2

“Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love.”

Historical Context:1 Kings 11 is part of the historical account of King Solomon, who succeeded his father David as the king of Israel. Solomon was renowned for his wisdom and the grandeur of his reign. However, as we reach this point in the narrative, we see that Solomon’s heart began to turn away from the Lord.

The Nations and Forbidden Intermarriage: The verse refers to “the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel.” In the Old Testament, God commanded the Israelites not to intermarry with the surrounding pagan nations. This command was given to prevent the Israelites from being led astray and worshiping other gods.

Turning Away the Heart:The verse states that these nations would turn away the hearts of the Israelites after their gods. The concern is that intermarriage with people who worshiped false gods would lead the Israelites to abandon their devotion to the one true God, Yahweh.

Solomon’s Actions:The verse concludes by saying that Solomon “clave unto these in love.” Sadly, Solomon, despite his great wisdom, disregarded God’s command and married many foreign women from these nations. He formed alliances through these marriages, but ultimately, this led to his downfall as he started worshipping the gods of his wives.

Lessons for us:

  • God’s commands are meant for our protection and well-being. In this case, God warned the Israelites not to intermarry with pagan nations to preserve their faithfulness to Him.
  • We must be careful not to compromise our faith and devotion to God by being unequally yoked with those who do not share our beliefs (2 Corinthians 6:14).
  • Our choices have consequences. Solomon’s disobedience led to idolatry, which resulted in the division of the kingdom and the eventual downfall of his dynasty.

In summary, 1 Kings 11:2 highlights the disobedience of Solomon in marrying foreign women from pagan nations. This disobedience led to his heart being turned away from the Lord and toward the worship of false gods. The verse serves as a warning about the dangers of compromising our faith and the importance of obeying God’s commands.
