1 Kings 12:9

“And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?”

This verse is part of a larger passage that describes the events following the death of King Solomon and the division of the kingdom of Israel into two parts: the northern kingdom of Israel, consisting of ten tribes, and the southern kingdom of Judah, consisting of two tribes (Judah and Benjamin).

In this particular verse, “he” refers to Rehoboam, Solomon’s son and successor, who had become the king of Israel. Rehoboam faced a delegation from the northern tribes who requested that he lighten the heavy yoke of labor and taxation imposed upon them during Solomon’s reign.

The key theme in this verse is the importance of wise counsel and leadership. Rehoboam faced a critical decision that would affect the future of his kingdom. Instead of responding rashly, he sought counsel from his advisors to determine the best course of action.

The verse presents a lesson on the value of seeking wise counsel when facing important decisions. It emphasizes the need to consider the perspectives and needs of the people one is leading. Rehoboam’s question, “What counsel give ye that we may answer this people,” demonstrates his recognition that he needed guidance in order to respond appropriately to the concerns raised by the delegation.

By seeking counsel, Rehoboam demonstrated a willingness to listen to others and consider their input. However, the outcome of this story reveals that Rehoboam did not heed the wise advice he received, ultimately leading to the division of the kingdom and the loss of most of his subjects.

This passage serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of pride, stubbornness, and a failure to listen to counsel. It highlights the importance of humility, wisdom, and understanding the needs of those under one’s leadership.

In summary:1 Kings 12:9 (KJV) portrays Rehoboam seeking counsel before making a decision that would impact the people he ruled over. The verse emphasizes the significance of wise counsel, humility, and attentiveness to the needs of others. It serves as a reminder for us to seek wisdom and guidance when faced with important decisions in our own lives.
