“And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward.”

This verse is part of a narrative that unfolds in 1 Kings 13, involving two characters: the man of God and King Jeroboam of Israel. It is important to read the entire chapter to understand the context and significance of verse 7.

The man of God:The chapter begins by introducing an unnamed prophet, often referred to as “the man of God.” He is sent by the Lord from Judah to deliver a message to King Jeroboam.

King Jeroboam:Jeroboam was the first king of the northern kingdom of Israel after the nation split into two (Israel in the north and Judah in the south). He had turned away from the Lord’s commandments and had set up golden calves for the people to worship, leading them into idolatry.

Invitation and promise:In verse 7, King Jeroboam invites the man of God to come to his home, offering him refreshment and a reward.

The story continues beyond this verse, and the man of God initially refuses the king’s invitation, obeying the word of the Lord. He was instructed not to eat or drink anything in that place and not to return by the same route he came.

However, the story takes a turn when an older prophet, who lived in Bethel (the same city the man of God was visiting), comes to him and deceives him into returning and eating with him. The man of God disobeys the command of God, and as a consequence, he is killed by a lion on his way back.

Now, let’s explore some key lessons and insights we can draw from this verse and the broader story:

Obedience to God:The man of God initially demonstrated obedience by following God’s instructions not to eat or drink in the land of Israel and to return without delay. However, his disobedience to God’s subsequent command through the older prophet led to severe consequences. This highlights the importance of remaining steadfast in obedience to God’s word, even in the face of temptations or pressures.

Temptation and deception:The story serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of succumbing to temptation and being deceived. The man of God was lured by the offer of refreshment and reward, which ultimately led to his downfall. It reminds us to be vigilant and discerning in discerning the source of advice or invitations we receive, ensuring they align with God’s will and word.

The seriousness of idolatry:King Jeroboam’s role in this story serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of idolatry and turning away from God’s commands. Jeroboam’s establishment of golden calves for worship was a direct violation of God’s commandments, and it led the people astray. The man of God was sent to rebuke this idolatrous system and the king’s actions.

God’s judgment and faithfulness:The story also reveals God’s judgment on those who defy His commandments. The man of God’s disobedience resulted in his demise as a consequence of his actions. It serves as a reminder that God’s commands are meant for our good, and disregarding them can lead to dire consequences. At the same time, this account underscores God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His word and executing justice.

In summary, 1 Kings 13:7 and the broader narrative surrounding it remind us of the importance of obedience to God’s commands, the dangers of temptation and deception, the seriousness of idolatry, and the consequences of disobedience. It serves as a cautionary tale and encourages us to stay faithful to God’s Word and remain discerning in our choices and associations.
